See all sizes delivered to San Francisco Bay AreaThe Bay Area clears most container volume through the Port of Oakland, which means East Bay and Peninsula deliveries are fast and well-priced. San Francisco proper is a different animal — tight hills, narrow streets, and strict SFMTA rules mean most SF deliveries run by crane, overnight, with a permit in hand. We handle both.

Site prep for the Bay Area
Bay Area seismic code is the strictest in the country — any permanent container placement should have Simpson-rated anchor ties to a concrete pad or pier system. For container homes in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Jose we refer to our local PE network for stamped foundation drawings.
SF deliveries are almost always crane drops. We schedule overnight street closures, pull the SFMTA permit, and coordinate the flagger. Expect 2–4x the tilt-bed delivery fee but a clean, legal drop on essentially any SF lot.
Permits
Oakland, Berkeley, and most East Bay cities treat containers as accessory structures with 180-day temporary use allowed on private property. SF DBI is stricter — any visible container typically needs a permit regardless of duration. We handle SFMTA street-use permits when we crane-drop.
Permits, wind zones, and HOA notes for San Francisco Bay Area.
Bay Area container regulations at a glance
- Oakland & East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Richmond): containers as accessory structures. 180-day temporary use on private property generally allowed without a permit.
- San Francisco DBI: strict. Any visible container typically requires a permit regardless of duration. Commercial/retail use in SF requires full entitlement. We handle the SFMTA street-use permit on crane drops.
- Peninsula (San Mateo, Palo Alto, Mountain View): permissive at the city level. Atherton, Woodside, and Hillsborough HOAs restrict visible containers.
- San Jose & South Bay: permissive. ADU-friendly; container-home conversions allowed with full building permit.
- BAAQMD (air quality): no specific container rules, but construction dust control required during jobsite placement.
- Seismic anchoring: strongly recommended for any permanent placement. We include Simpson HDU-rated tie-downs at cost.
