What used containers
actually look like.
We get this every week: “Can I see pictures of the used unit I’d get?” Honest answer: not of your specific box before you buy. Depots assign the unit after payment. What we can show you is the condition band: real Used WWT deliveries, representative product galleries, and a plain-English grade guide so New vs Used is an easy call.
These are Used WWT units we delivered.
Not stock photos. Not a promise of this exact serial number. Samples of the condition band you should expect when you buy Used Wind & Watertight from Containers Direct.

Surface rust on rails and doors is normal. Structure is sealed.

Ocean-line markings stay. Color is whatever the depot pulled.

You inspect with the driver before they leave.

Orange rust on rails and panels is cosmetic. WWT is about seal, not paint.

Ocean branding stays. Color and cosmetics vary by the unit the depot pulls.

Same grade band: dry, sealed, working doors. Not showroom cosmetics.
Why we cannot send photos of “your” container first.
Depot yards stack hundreds of boxes. Your specific unit is not allocated until after you pay and the yard pulls the next qualifying container for size and grade. Anyone promising exact serial-number photos before purchase is either guessing or holding a one-off retail lot (which is a different, slower business).
That is how depot-direct pricing stays fast and cheap. You buy a grade, not a named box. We stand behind the grade with a 30-day condition guarantee.
- Representative galleries by grade on every product page
- Real Used WWT delivery photos on this page
- Clear WWT vs New expectations before you buy
- Inspect with the driver at delivery, before they leave
- 48-hour photo report + 30-day remedy for material grade failures (not cosmetics)
Acceptable wear. Non-negotiable seal.
Same industry standard you will see from Eveon, Boxhub, and the xChange buyer’s guide: used ocean containers look used. The grade is about weatherproof function, not showroom cosmetics.
Dents, scratches, surface rust
Years at sea leave cosmetic wear on doors, rails, and corners. Corten steel forms a protective rust patina. Surface rust is not rust-through.
Worn floors are normal
Stains, gouges, top-veneer wear, and depot patches are common on used plywood floors. That is cosmetic wear, not rot-through. WWT floors stay solid and sealed.
No holes. No leaks.
WWT means dry and sealed: roof, walls, floor, and door gaskets keep weather out. Stand inside with doors shut and you should not see daylight.
Color is not a choice
Yards pull the next qualifying unit by size and grade, not paint color. Expect red, blue, green, grey, or faded mixed stock.
Our 30-day condition guarantee:confirmed material grade failures only (leaks, structural), not “it looks too used.” Photo-report within 48 hours of delivery and we work the claim with the depot. Cosmetics (paint fade, surface rust, dents, markings, stained or worn floors) are expected on Used WWT and are not a defect.
New vs Used, side by side.
Containers Direct sells both online. Pick Used WWT when the box is storage or will get cut/painted. Pick New when customers, guests, or finished builds will see the steel every day. Galleries below are the same representative SKU shots from our product pages: exterior, doors open, interior, floor, corners, and hardware.

Used Wind & Watertight
Weathered paint, surface rust, ocean markings, worn floors, possible patches. Dry, sealed, doors work. Best value for storage and utility.
Shop Used WWT

New / One-Trip
Factory paint, minimal dents, usually under a year old. Max one ocean voyage. Choose this when appearance is part of the product.
Shop New / One-Trip

Shown: 40ft High-Cube galleries. Same condition band applies to 20ft and 40ft standard. Full shot lists live on each product page.
New, CW, WWT, As-Is.
Containers Direct sells Used WWT and New one-trip online. CW is quote-on-request. As-Is is educational only (we do not sell it).
New / One-Trip
Built overseas and shipped to the US with one cargo load. Factory paint, minimal dents, usually under a year old. Best when appearance matters.
- Container homes / ADUs where appearance matters
- Retail pop-ups, offices, customer-facing builds
- Modification projects with factory-straight panels
- Buyers who want cleaner cosmetics out of the gate
- Pure storage where no one sees it
- Budget-first purchases
Wind & Watertight
The workhorse. Dry, sealed, doors operate, roof does not leak. Expect surface rust, dents, faded paint, and worn or stained floors.
- On-site storage where appearance is secondary
- Backyard / acreage / job-site storage
- Agricultural use (hay, equipment, tack)
- Builds where you will cut or repaint anyway
- Retail / customer-facing use without refinishing
- Buyers expecting showroom floors or paint
- International export (ask for CW instead)
Cargo Worthy
Certified for another international ocean voyage. Structure is sound, doors work, no holes. Cosmetic wear is still normal.
- Export shipping (required by most ocean carriers)
- Heavy-duty storage with periodic inspection
- Projects where you need a current CSC plate
- Pure aesthetic use (buy New instead)
- Assuming CW means near-new cosmetics
As-Is
Below WWT. We do not warrant cosmetic or functional condition. Typically has holes, failing doors, or structural issues.
- Heavy structural modifications where you cut panels anyway
- Scrap / parts / artificial reef projects
- Storage (water will get in)
- Export (will fail inspection)
- First-time buyers (you likely need WWT minimum)
